 How to reach Aachen

If travelling by plane Aachen can be reached from different airports. Maastricht/Aachen Airport is a small airport close to the city. However, the large international airports of Düsseldorf and Frankfurt offer the most convenient travelling to the city. Brussels, Amsterdam and maybe even Paris Airport are other large international airports where can be landed to visit Aachen, but travelling to Aachen from these airports will take more time.

Maastricht/Aachen Airport (approx. 40 km from Aachen) (www.maa.nl)

Unfortunately there is no train connection between Maastricht and Aachen, but the Dutch bus "Interliner" (lines 420 and 421) operates between the airport and Aachen main station every 30 minutes. The fare for a one-way ticket is about € 8,00.

Düsseldorf Airport (approx. 90 km from Aachen) (www.duesseldorf-international.de)

This airport has a very good connection to Aachen. A Sky train or bus will shuttle you from the terminal of arrival to the railway station (national trains). Here you can take either the regional express (RE) which leaves Düsseldorf Airport every hour to go directly to Aachen or you can take trains (IR, IC, ICE), where you have to change once in Cologne or Düsseldorf main station. Information about the trains leaving Düsseldorf Airport will be provided by the "Deutsche Bahn" under www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de.

Additionally the "Airport Aixpress" is a direct airport bus service between Aachen and Düsseldorf. The shuttle service runs between 7:00 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. every 90 minutes (from 8:30 p.m. till 11:30 p.m. every 60 minutes) and leaves outside terminal C. The fare for a one-way ticket is € 19,50 and the travel time between 60-90 minutes. Reservation is desired (phone: +49 (0) 241-182000, Fax: +49 (0) 241-1820027).

Frankfurt Airport (approx. 150 km from Aachen) (www.frankfurt-airport.de)

This airport has a very good high speed train connection to Aachen. The fast ICE will take you directly from Frankfurt Airport to Aachen in only 2 hours. Train travel information can be found under www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de.

Köln/Bonn Airport (Cologne/Bonn Airport) (approx. 80 km from Aachen) (www.airport-cgn.de/)

The easiest way to get from this airport to Aachen is via bus since the airport is not directly connected to a train station. The "Airport Aixpress" is a direct airport bus service between Cologne/Bonn Airport and Aachen. The shuttle service runs three times a day (6:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.) and leaves from terminal 2 "D" bus station. The fare for a one-way ticket is € 19,50 and the travel time between 60-90 minutes. Reservation is desired (phone: +49 (0) 241-182000, Fax: +49 (0) 241-1820027).

Additionally a daily bus service (line 170, fare € 1,90) operates every 12 minutes between the airport and the central station in the city centre of Cologne. Unfortunately, you have to walk approx. 8 min. from the final bus stop to the station. From the Cologne Central Station trains to Aachen leaves every 30 minutes to one hour. Information about the trains will be provided by the "Deutsche Bahn" under www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de.

Brussels Airport (approx. 140 km from Aachen) (www.brusselsairport.be)

From Bruxelles Airport you first take a train to Bruxelles-Central or Bruxelles-Midi, where you change to a train going to Aachen (final destination: Cologne). Information will be provided by the Belgium railways www.b-rail.be (you should check under "timetables"). The Thalys train is not recommendable, because you need a reservation for this train, it is more expensive (€ 22,80 one-way) than the Intercity (€ 19,80 one-way) and not much faster!

Amsterdam Shiphol Airport (approx. 225 km from Aachen) (www.schiphol.nl)

In Amsterdam you first take the train to Amsterdam Centraal, where you can take a train to Heerlen in the south of the Netherlands. In Heerlen a train leaves every hour to Aachen. Information about the trains will be provided by the "Deutsche Bahn" under www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de.

If travelling by train Aachen can be excellently reached from any direction because of the good connections to the stations in Düsseldorf, Cologne or Brussels. The easiest way to find a suitable train is to check on the webpages of the "Deutsche Bahn" under www.reiseauskunft.bahn.de.
