The large development of thermal plasma processes is mainly connected to new fields of high temperature applications. It has to be emphasized that high temperature processes such as material treatments, chemical phenomena, heat and mass transfer for space challenge, waste treatment, welding, spraying metallurgical operations etc... are connected with high tech processes.
In order to qualify, characterise and simulate the plasma processes and the interaction of plasmas with materials, fundamental knowledge including metastable states properties, new chemical properties, excited state densities, non equilibrium processes, gas flow modeling, measuring techniques are mandatory.
However plasma composition, thermodynamic and transport properties at equilibrium or out of equilibrium are a prerequisite for mcdeling and even measurements.
Of course if it is important to have a better insight of the fundamental phenomena, plasma science can be developed only if it has an industrial support. That is why for now more than three decades many applications have been created, some of them being still in laboratories but a lot being used in industry and representing high sales that is why applications are an important part if this meeting.
