TIPS FOR SPEAKERS
USING THE UEF COMPUTER PROJECTOR

The United Engineering Foundation owns an INFOCUS computer projector which has a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels (SVGA). . It can be used with either IBM-based or Mac computers and no adjustments are required on computers with this resolution. Although the vast majority of projectors and notebook computers in use today have this resolution, many of the newest laptops have 1024 x 768 (XGA) resolution. Without changing the settings on your computer, you will be projecting compressed images unless you make some simple adjustments on your computer. You can easily change your computer’s settings to match the UEF projector by following the instructions below:

Changing the settings on your computer
1. Open your computer’s Control Panels
2. Double-click on Display
3. Select the Settings tab
4. Adjust the Desktop Area to 800 x 600

Keep in mind that this process may vary slightly from computer to computer. But the idea is the same. Some models require you to reboot the computer (while it’s plugged into the projector and the projector is turned on) for images to look best.

Set-up
The set-up information accompanies the projector. Follow the directions and do a run-through of your presentation.

Generally try to situate yourself on the side of the table that’s opposite the door so people are less likely to trip over any power cords.

Plug in the projector. Do this before you turn on the projector. Simply match the icon on each end of the cord with the icons on your computer and projector. One cord is all that’s necessary for a basic connection. Make sure you attach it firmly, using the screws when provided. (You would not want to disconnect when someone accidentally bumps your computer.)

Turn the projector on first. This eliminates most connection problems. Once the projector is switched on, then boot up your computer. If you are still not projecting on the screen, first make sure the lens cover is removed, and then activate your video port. This “port” on the back of your notebook computer isn’t always active. People describe it as a little valve that needs to be opened to let the image out. Usually this happens automatically when you plug in your computer. But if an image doesn’t appear, try activating it by holding down the “function” key (Fn) and hitting the “F” key (i.e., F5 or F8). The exact “F” key varies from computer to computer.

Adjust your image. Once you’re projecting, don’t forget to focus the image, adjust the height of the projector (using the built-in height-adjustment foot), and center it side to side. The image should not be skewed or “keystoned” (it makes slides difficult to read). Also, avoid placing the projector too close (or too far) from the screen.

Additional tips:

  1. Make sure your screen-saver is switched off.
  2. Although the UEF usually has an extension cord packed with the projector, bring your own as the “low battery warnings” are not only annoying but you can also find your presentation abruptly cut short.
  3. Be sure your presentation is readable. If it isn’t big enough to read, do not present it. Few things are more frustrating to an audience than tiny type. Presentations should read like a poster rather than a novel.
  4. Practice.
