Oral and poster presentations
The oral presentations will consist of both plenary
lectures and refereed papers. For refereed papers, the format
is 20 minutes for presentation plus 5 minutes for questions/discussion.
Poster sessions will be a significant part of the
conference program since they offer the unique opportunity for
focussing on specific topics of interest and expanding beyond
the limitations of the oral presentations.
Submission of abstracts
Original papers for either oral or poster presentations
at the above listed topics are invited. Authors willing to have
their contributions considered for an oral or poster presentation
need to submit a one page abstract by October 12, 2001.
Abstracts should be submitted electronically
following the instructions given in
On-line Abstract Submission. If unable to submit the
abstract electronically, please contact the Foundation.. The organizing committee will
review all abstracts, and authors will be notified by December
2001 whether the abstract has been accepted, and if accepted,
whether for an oral or poster presentation.
The following is the proposed timetable for the PI2
conference:
12 October 2001: Deadline for abstract
December 2001: Notification of acceptance
31 March 2002: Submission of 8-page manuscript
30 June 2002: Notification of acceptance for paper
Publication of proceedings
Arrangements are in progress to provide for the publication
of papers that will be presented at the conference in a prestigious
international journal. Instructions on submissions of manuscripts
will be sent for those presentations have been accepted.
Attendance of conference
Attendance will be limited and by invitation only
in order to ensure the ability to interact with all participants.
Any person wishing to attend the conference must submit an application
form (form to be faxed or mailed)
(on-line form to be e-mailed) to the UEF by December 2001.
United Engineering Foundation (UEF) conferences
fellowship program
The UEF sponsors a Conference Fellowship Program.
Applicants are limited to those currently active in engineering
or related professions with a direct interest in the conference
topic. The Fellowship is sufficient to cover the conference registration
fee and on-site room and board. Transportation expenses are not
included. Application information may be obtained from theWWW or by fax from the Foundation
(1-212-591-7441) and must be submitted by 1st May 2002.
United Engineering Foundation Conferences
The United Engineering Foundation (UEF) sponsors
this conference. The UEF conferences program was established in
1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration of problems
and issues of concern to engineering from many disciplines. The
format of the conference provides morning and evening sessions
in which major presentations are made. Available time is included
during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings and informal
discussions and is designed to enhance rapport among participants
and promote dialogue on the developments of the meeting. We believe
the conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and
disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible
through more conventional forums. All participates are expected
to contribute actively to the discussions.

Uniquely Scottish attractions include the Caledonian
Brewery, Clan Tartan Centre at Leith Mills, Glenkinchie Distillery,
Scotch Malt Whiskey Society, Scotch Whiskey Heritage Center, and
the Tartan Weaving Mill and Exhibition.
Edinburgh is a vibrant city with the feel and excitement
of London or Paris, while remaining intimate and friendly. It
is a city that people from across the world have come to know
and love. Every August, the world famous Edinburgh International
Festival takes over the city with music, comedy and theatre. Hundreds
of thousands of people from all over the world arrive to take
part and share in the culture of a great European city. The proposed
conference dates will be just after the famous festival.
Scotland is recognized the world over as the "Home
of Golf", there are over 100 golf courses in the vicinity
of Edinburgh, including the three famous Championship courses
- St Andrews, Gleneagles and Carnoustie, all within easy traveling
distance. St. Andrews is just an hour and half away from Edinburgh.
It is planned to visit St. Andrews as one of the conference excursions,
with possibility of playing a round of golf in the world renowned
Old Course. If you are interested in a round of golf just
before, during or just after the conference, please be sure to
complete and return the questionnaire (an Adobe pdf file) and return it as soon as
possible. If you wish to play at the New Course (next to
the Old Course) at St. Andrews, you need a handicap of not more
than 24 for men and 36 for ladies. Provisionally 40 places are
reserved for the conference, which will be filled on a first come-first
served basis. The allocation of tee-off times will be finalized
by the St. Andrews Links Trust in November 2001.
Set amidst the beautiful landscaped parklands of
Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Conference Centre is one of
the UK's leading academic conference venues, with a range of year
round meeting facilities, exhibition space, accommodation and
an extensive range of on-site services. It is ideal for this conference.
It is also intended that every dinner will be taking place in
a different place in and out of Edinburgh in order to exploit
the historical city.
Transportation to Edinburgh and Edinburgh Conference
Centre
Getting to Edinburgh
By rail The mainline rail network serves the centre
of Edinburgh well. Edinburgh Waverley is at the east
end of Princes Street, and Haymarket station is in
the west end. Reach Riccarton by bus, taxi or car.
By air Edinburgh International Airport is served by scheduled national and international flights. The airport is on the west of the city, not far from the campus. The journey by taxi takes about 10 minutes, and a regular bus service links the airport and the city centre.
Getting to Edinburgh Conference Centre at Riccarton
Campus, Heriot-Watt University
By road Heriot-Watt University's campus at Riccarton
is easily accessible by car both from the centre of
Edinburgh (6 miles) and from all major routes leading
to the city. The University is half a mile from
the Calder Junction of the A720 Edinburgh By-Pass
and the A71 (signs for Heriot-Watt University are on approach
to Calder Junction).
On the M8, from Glasgow, turn right at the Hermiston
Gait roundabout following the signs for the A71.
The A720 is a dual carriageway that skirts Edinburgh
and can be accessed from all the major routes entering and leaving
the city: A90 (North), M8 and M9 (West), A702 (South and M6),
A7 and A68 (Borders and South), A1 (South and East).
Car parking Unless prior arrangements have been made,
visitors should park in the visitors' car park (campus
map will be provided in the registration packet)
on the right of the Avenue as they arrive.
Taxis There are a number of taxi services in the centre of Edinburgh including those at Waverley Station (rail) and St Andrew Square (coach station). The journey to Heriot-Watt University at Riccarton takes about 20 minutes. At Riccarton, taxis can be requested from the reception desk in the James Watt Centre.
Conference Excursions
Edinburgh is a historical city, and a number of optional
excursions will be organised, e.g. Edinburgh Castle, Holyroodhouse
Palace, Scottish Whisky Centre, St. Andrews, etc. There will be
sign-up sheets in the Conference Registration package and at the
registration for those who are interested in participating. The
excursion fees will cover the rental of bus and entry fees.
