Abstract :
As all the limit values, the di/dt value for thyristors is rather
delicate to define. The resistance of a thyristor to high current
gradients at the start depends on numerous parameters. Test
conditions vary considerably from a standard specification to
another and they often led to values which cannot be used in
practice. In the present stage of technology no simple and quick
procedure is available to the user for enabling him to quickly know
if the di/dt value applied can overload his thyristor. It is
therefore required to base on experience. To conclude, the author
lists some protection methods and precautionary measures to be
taken. He finally reviews the conventional circuits and studies the
cases where thyristors can be submitted to di/dt.
