- The roots of
the E-MRS can be traced back to excellent
small-scale symposia on Electronic Materials in
the early 1980s in France: The E-MRS was created
thanks to the initiative of individual European
Material scientists. At an early stage the need
for international cooperation in Europe and the
need for closer ties between industry and science
in materials research was recognized and
discussed.This resulted in the

- 1983
|
- Foundation of
the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS)
with seat in Strasbourg.
|
- 1985
|
- E-MRS
initiated and proposed the concept of European-multinational,
scientific Networks on Advanced Materials to
the European Commission (EC) in Brussels "to
initiate the process of Ewopean cooperation and
integration in the field of materials
research": Comprized were topics-specific
networks each on "electronic materials"
and "non-electronic materials". - 25
scientific, thematic Networks including a total
of 500 public and private laboratories in Europe,
cooperating in the fields of Advanced Material
R&D, were organized and managed by E-MRS.
|
- 1990
|
- The European
Commission incorporated the E-MRS
Network-initiative in their
Framework-programs: in ESPRIT as
"Networks of Excellence", in BRITE-
EURAM and HCM.
|
- 1990
|
- E-MRS prepared
a strategic study "Prospects of Research
on Electronic Materials" for the
3rd Framework Program, which was submitted to the
EEC and generally accepted.
|
- 1992
|
- E-MRS
organized the 1st major East/West Conference
on Advanced Materials: 300 high ranking
Material scientists and engineers from the former
USSR were invited by E-MRS and attended the E-MRS
1993 Fall Meeting in Strasbourg.
- - EEC
supported this initiative in the form of ECU
300,000 travel expenses.
- - This event
involved in total 1500 participants in the
Conference and visitors in the accompanying
"Ukrainian Exhibition on Advanced
Material".
|
- 1993
|
- A direct
consequence of the E-MRS 1992 initiative was the
joint effort of the E-MRS Fall Conference 1993
in St. Petersburg, Russia, at the invitation
of the Russian Academie of Science and the
Russian Ministry for Research and Technology
Policy.
- - The
successfull conference with 650 participants
received EEC Support.
- - The contacts
established at both conferences (1992 and 1993)
have created scientific as well as commercial
links. In addition, the conferences created links
for the EC to support Advanced Material R&D
in Russia in the frame of the various
EC-programs.
|
- 1994
|
- A joint
China MRS and E-MRS Symposium on
"Electronic and Optoelectronic
Materials" was helt in Bejing/China,
December 15.-16., at the invitation of the
Chinese Academy of Sciences and the MRS of China;
This symposium did not receive EEC support.
Nevertheless a small E-MRS delegation took part.

|
- E-MRS 1995
Spring-Meeting: More than 1200 scientists
attended the Conference from 22.-26. May at the
European Council / European Parliament,
Strasbourg. 14 symposia with 1230 oral and poster
presentations presented again a good balance
between topics from fundamental research and
topics from applied research with medium and
shortterm perspectives.

- E-MRS 1996
Spring-Meeting, Strasbourg, 3-7 June. With
more than 1250 papers, more than 1300
scientists, physicist, chemist and engineers of
all disciplines present, this annu- lar
E-MRS Conference has confirmed to be the central
place in Europe for presentation of new
scientific ideas and innovative results in the
challenged work area of European Material
R&D.

Conference on Advanced Materials, ICAM",
Strasbourg, 16-20 June. The IU-MRS is the
intemational body consisting of all MRS's
worldwide. It's biannual large scale material
science conferences ICAM is a mean of world-wide
exchance of the latest materials research
results. More than 1110 material scientists from
more than 30 countries worldwide attended.
