About this Conference

The United Engineering Foundation (UEF) is sponsoring this first international conference focussing entirely on electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and its application as a processing technique for the fabrication of both traditional and new materials. Although the basics of EPD are well-known and have been the subject of extensive research, further work needs to be done to develop a full, quantitative understanding of the fundamental mechanisms of EPD. In particular, when 2- or 3-component suspensions are used with the aim of fabricating complex microstructures by EPD. New application areas for EPD are the low-cost fabrication of composite materials including fibre-reinforced ceramics, nanocomposites, composite laminates and functional graded materials. Furthermore, EPD of electroceramic particulate materials gives potential advances in a number of novel applications including piezoelectric devices, biomedical ultrasound probes, chemical sensors and solid oxide fuel cells. EPD is also an advantageous technology for the manufacture of small-scale, near net-shape objects having accurate dimensions.

It is a general belief that the full potential of the EPD technique for materials processing has not as yet been fully exploited. This is the main motivation for the organisation of an international event. This UEF-sponsored conference will be the very first international event dealing specifically with EPD as a material processing technique. It will, therefore, constitute a unique, timely forum for the discussion of EPD relevant issues among experts from industry and academia active in research and development in this area.

The conference is endorsed by several societies, including the American Ceramic Society, the European Ceramic Society, the Institute of Materials (London), the Electrochemical Society and the German Materials Society (DGM).

Conference Organization

Minami (Osaka Pref. University, Japan), R. Moreno (Inst. De Ceramica y Vidrio, Spain), E. Mueller (University of Freiberg, Germany), C. B. Ponton (The University of Birmingham, UK), C. Randall, (Penn State University, USA), P. Sarkar (Alberta Research Council, Canada), N. Stoloff (Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA), J. B. Talbot (University of California-San Diego, USA), T. Umegaki (Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan) and I. Zhitomirsky (McMaster University, Canada).

Session Topics
Session topics will include:

Submission of Abstracts
Original papers for presentations at the above listed sessions are invited. If you wish to be considered for an oral or poster presentation, please submit a one page (250 words) abstract by February 28, 2002. Abstracts should be submitted electronically following the instructions given in On-line Abstract Submission. If unable to submit the abstract electronically, please contact the Foundation. All abstracts will be reviewed by the session chairs.

Graduate students and young investigators are particularly encouraged to present posters. An evening poster session will be an integral part of the conference.

If an abstract has multiple authors who each wish an invitation to attend the conference, each author must submit a separate application.

Publication of Proceedings
Arrangements are in progress to provide for the publication of papers that will be presented at the Conference, either as a special issue of a refereed academic journal or as a separate conference proceedings book with peer refereeing. Instructions on submissions of manuscripts will be sent to those whose presentations have been accepted. All conference participants will receive a copy of the publication.

Attendance of Conference
Attendance will be limited and by invitation only. In order to ensure the ability to interact with all participants, the conference will be limited to about 120 attendees. Any person wishing to attend the conference must submit an application form to the United Engineering Foundation by February 28, 2002.

United Engineering Foundation Conferences
United Engineering Foundation Conferences were established in 1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineers from many disciplines. The format of the Conference provides morning and evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Time is available during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings and informal discussions and is designed to enhance rapport among participants and prompt dialogue on the developments of the meeting. We believe the Conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums. All participants are expected to contribute actively to the discussions.

United Engineering Foundation Conference Fellowship Program
The United Engineering Foundation sponsors a Conference Fellowship Program. Applicants are limited to those currently active in Engineering or related professions with a direct interest in the conference topic. They must be within ten years of their B. Sc. degree at the time their application is submitted. The stipend is sufficient to cover the conference registration fee and on-site room and board. Transportation expenses are not included. Application information may be obtained from the WWW or by fax from the Foundation (1-212-591-7441) and must be submitted by May 18, 2002.

Hotel and Travel Information

Conference Location
The Conference will be held at the Banff Centre for Conferences. The Centre offers Conference facilities, which are unmatched in Western Canada. Conference participants can use the facilities of the Sally Borden Building that houses an extensive selection of sports, social and fitness facilities. This includes a 25-meter pool for swimming laps or recreation, saunas and whirlpool, full-size gymnasium with indoor running track, tennis, badminton, racquetball and squash courts, and exercise room. Equipment is available for rental. Accompanying guests are welcome for a day use fee.

Banff National Park with its scenic mountains, glaciers, rivers and lakes surrounds the Centre on all sides and offers truly breathtaking opportunities for outdoor adventure, wildlife viewing and sightseeing. For those who plan to extend their stay, popular day-trips are to Lake Louise, the Icefield Parkway (the highway joining Banff and Jasper National Parks which runs along a chain of massive icefields and straddles the continental divide), and Johnston Canyon, the site of waterfalls and springs. The temperatures in mid August average 20oC - 25°C, but nights can be significantly cooler. Come prepared!

The town of Banff is 125 kilometers west of Calgary (approximately a 1-1/2 hour drive) and the Calgary International Airport. The regular bus (motor coach) services are available directly from the airport or downtown Calgary.
