About this Conference

This conference highlights solutions to the significant fuel-quality challenges facing power producers. These challenges include the implementation of low-NOx controls and downstream cleanup systems, decreases in effective CO2 emissions per unit of power generated, increases in availability and capacity, and improved sensors and controls. Addressing these challenges requires solutions to several technical problems, including slagging, fouling, corrosion, sooting, ash disposal, catalyst poisoning, etc. This conference focuses on end-results and application of fundamental information to minimize fuel quality impacts.

This conference includes papers and attendees that deal with alternative fuels (different from coal) such as biomass, black liquor and pet coke. The conference will address issues of importance to all of these low-grade fuels, recognizing that coal remains the single most important fuel for power generation in most countries.

Sessions for the conference will include:

Physical Properties of Ash/Deposits
Deposit Formation
Deposit Removal
Deposition Modeling
Corrosion: Fundamental Studies
Corrosion: Commercial Experience
Soot Formation and Control
Issues for Alternate Fuel Blends
Diagnostics, Sensors, and Controls

The timeline for the conference is as follows:
Date Action Required
July 1 Submit abstracts.
Aug 15 Authors notified of selection of papers and posters for presentation.
Sep 30 Submit full papers for presentation.

Abstract Submission
Original papers for either oral or poster presentations at the above listed sessions are invited. If you wish to be considered for an oral or poster presentation, please submit a one page abstract by July 1, 2001. Abstracts should be submitted electronically following the instructions given in On-line Abstract Submission. If unable to submit the abstract electronically, please contact the Foundation..

Poster Sessions will be an integral part of the conference program, as they offer a unique opportunity for focusing on specific topics of interest and expanding beyond the limitations of the oral presentations.

Conference and session chairs will review all abstracts and notify you regarding acceptance of your abstract as an oral or poster presentation. All presentations will be combined in a published volume of conference proceedings.

Engineering Foundation Conferences
The United Engineering Foundation Conferences program was established in 1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineers from many disciplines. The format of the Conference provides morning and evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Time is available during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings and informal discussions and is designed to enhance rapport among participants and prompt dialogue on the developments of the meeting. We believe the Conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums. All participants are expected to contribute actively to the discussions.

United Engineering Foundation Conference Fellowship Program
The United Engineering Foundation sponsors a Conference Fellowship program. Applicants are limited to those currently active in engineering or related professions with a direct interest in the conference topic. They must be within ten years of their B.Sc. degree at the time their applications are submitted. The stipend is sufficient to cover the conference registration fee and on-site room and board. Transportation expenses are not included. Application information may be obtained from the WWW or by fax from the Foundation (1-212-591-7441) and must be submitted by August 3, 2001.
