Conference Objectives
The main objectives of the conference
are to exchange technical information and ideas among the various
scientists and engineers working in Microgravity Fluid, Thermal,
Biological, and Materials Sciences. These areas have become important
to various disciplines within the broader realm of Microgravity
research. The conference will address the crosscutting aspects
of microgravity science and technology and provide a forum for
the synthesis of knowledge that has been acquired of the last
several years. It will effectively cover the growing interdisciplinary
aspects of Microgravity Science and Technology.
Background
With several Space-Shuttle experiments
that have been conducted over the last 10-15 years, significant
new insights have been gained into various physical phenomena
under microgravity conditions. There is, at present, a need to
provide direction for microgravity research in which fluid flow,
combustion, and other transport processes form a common basis
for many investigations. For example, in Biomedical Engineering
and Materials Processing, fluid, thermal and mass-transport aspects
have gained primacy among various researchers, and the sharing
and complementing of expertise has become a necessity for technical
progress. In addition with long-term manned space missions in
the near future, technical problems encompassing several of these
disciplines have been envisioned. The conference will provide
for the free flow of ideas under this common theme, and provide
a focus on the interdisciplinary aspects.
Scope of the Conference
This is the second Conference dedicated
on this emerging field of Microgravity Transport Processes organized
by the United Engineering Foundation. The Foundation has recognized
the importance of providing a forum for the exchange of ideas
from various types of research organizations (universities, government
laboratories and private industries).
Conference Format
The Conference will be held for 5 days,
beginning on Sunday evening. Sessions may be scheduled in the
mornings, afternoons, and/or evenings, with breaks in the formal
program to allow small group interactions. Each session will have
1 or 2 invited lectures and 4 to 5 short presentations followed
by a panel discussion. There will be no parallel sessions. All
participants will stay at the Conference site. The Conference
registration fee will include complete room and board, proceedings
and other related conference material, and two coffee/tea breaks
per day. This format employed in United Engineering Foundation
Conferences allows maximum interaction, discussion and networking
among the Conference participants.
All those who will participate in the Conference should understand that they are expected to make contributions throughout the Conference. These contributions may be oral or written, formal or informal, with the goal that every participant contributes positively to the discussions and the success of the Conference.
Submission, Selection, Publication
and Presentation of Contributed Papers
Researchers, users, manufacturers,
designers and contractors are invited to submit the abstracts
and eventually papers for this unique Conference. Abstracts should be submitted electronically
following the instructions given in
On-line Abstract Submission. If unable to submit the
abstract electronically, please contact the Foundation.
United Engineering Foundation Conferences
United Engineering Foundation Conferences
were established in 1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration
of problems and issues of concern to engineers from many disciplines.
The format of the Conference provides morning and evening sessions
in which major presentations are made. Time is available during
the afternoons for ad hoc meetings and informal discussions and
is designed to enhance rapport among participants and prompt dialogue
on the developments of the meeting. We believe the Conferences
have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information
to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional
forums. All participants are expected to contribute actively to
the discussions.

EF Conferences' Frequently Asked Questions |
The Banff Centre is a smoke-free work
environment. Smoking is permitted in specific locations only.
There is no smoking at any UEF conference function (technical
or social).
Banff National Park with its scenic
mountains, glaciers, rivers and lakes surrounds the Centre on
all sides and offers truly breathtaking opportunities for outdoor
adventure, wildlife viewing and sightseeing. For those who plan
to extend their stay, popular day-trips are to Lake Louise, the
Icefield Parkway (the highway joining Banff and Jasper National
Parks which runs along a chain of massive icefields and straddles
the continental divide), and Johnston Canyon, the site of waterfalls
and springs. The temperatures in mid July average 20oC
- 25°C, but nights can be significantly cooler. Come prepared!
The town of Banff is 125 kilometers
west of Calgary (approximately a 1-1/2 hour drive) and the Calgary
International Airport. The regular bus (motor coach) services
are available directly from the airport or downtown Calgary.
Venue
Banff is high [1400 m] in the Canadian
Rocky Mountains in Banff National Park. People unaccustomed to
high altitutdes may temporarily experience shortness of breath
and dizziness, particularly with physical exercise. The Banff
Centre for Conferences (www.banffcentre.ab.ca) is located in the
town of Banff.
An optional afternoon tour during the
conference is planned. More information will be available during
registration. However, the conference provides an excellent opportunity
to combine business and pleasure in Alberta either before or after
the conference. Among the opportunities, you can drive the Icefields
Parkway between Banff and Jasper; see majestic mountain peaks,
emerald-green lakes and roaring waterfalls; walk on the sky-high
Athabasca Glacier of the Columbia Icefield; visit Johnston Canyon
or Takakkaw Falls or other places of scenic beauty.
Within a comfortable driving distance
of Banff in a leisurely 5 to 7-day loop, with lots of stops, are
Lake Louise, Jasper, Mount Robson, Edmonton [with West Edmonton
Mall], Drumheller [The Royal Tyrell Museum with dinosaurs galore]
and Calgary. Other longer or shorter adventures trips are possible.
For more information on the Banff/Lake
Louise area, go to www.banfflakelouise.com
Transportation to Banff
The Calgary International Airport services
daily flights from most major centers in Canada, the United States,
Europe and the Orient. Major car rental companies are also located
at the airport and in Calgary and Banff. From the Calgary Airport,
one would follow signs to the TransCanada Highway (Route 1) that
goes directly to Banff.
Modern, comfortable motor coach service is available directly from the airport. There are two companies that offer transportation:
For additional up-to-date information,
go to the www.banfflakelouise.com and link to "Getting Here".
For the return trip from the Banff
Center to the airport, all the bus companies require reservations
at least 24 hours prior to departure. As the return schedule
may change, we advise you to check departure times when you make
your reservation to Banff.
National Park Permit
A permit costing $10 Canadian per day
for each of the first two persons in private vehicles is payable
on entering the park. Alternatively an annual permit of $70 for
a vehicle may be a better buy. Park Passes must be purchased
at the entrance to Banff National Park. For persons traveling
by motor coach, the park entrance fee is usually covered in the
coach fare.
