About this Conference

Synopsis and outline of program
Solid-liquid separations are widely used unit operations in the chemical, mining, pulp and paper, wastewater, sugar, pharmaceutical, ceramics and other industries. They include cake and deep-bed filtration, expression, clarification, thickening, centrifugation and hydrocycloning. New technologies of increasing significance are bioseparation and nanotechnology. Fundamental aspects of solid-liquid separation processes include properties of suspensions (particle size, shape, particle-particle interaction, surface characteristics, yield stress and concentration), sediments and porous cakes (permeability, porosity and compressibility).

While much practical progress has been made in materials of construction, mechanical operation and control of equipment, a significant gap still persists between theoretical research and its application to the design and optimization of commercial processes. This conference intends to continue the two preceding events in this series, the last one of which took place at Kahuku, Oahu, Hawaii, April 18-23, 1999, whose main objectives were to provide a review of the state-of-the-art in solid-liquid separation research and to assess the applicability of research to industrial processes. Moreover, since researchers in an increasing of variety of disciplines of science such as biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, mineral processing, computers science and mathematics have become interested in solid-liquid separation systems, the conference became a forum for international interdisciplinary discussion.

Given the customary UEF conference format, the following five sessions are planned:, listed here with topics that are to be discussed in each:

Modes of Presentation
The conference will include three types of presentations:
Keynote lectures will be offered by recognized experts in each of the respective session topics
Technical sessions comprise oral presentations of technical advances by participants of the conference
Participants may alternatively present results as a contribution to a poster session.

We would like to adopt the traditional division of each session into a morning technical session, headed by a keynote lecture and followed by lunch, a poster session and an evening technical session, and dinner followed by a social hour.

Submission of Additional Abstracts for Poster Presentations
The conference organizing committee welcomes additional abstracts for poster presentations at this conference. Please submit a one page abstract by August 15, 2001. Abstracts should be submitted electronically following the instructions given in On-line Abstract Submission. If unable to submit the abstract electronically, please contact the Foundation.

United Engineering Foundation Conferences
United Engineering Foundation Conferences were established in 1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineers from many disciplines. The format of the Conference provides morning and evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Time is available during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings and informal discussions and is designed to enhance rapport among participants and prompt dialogue on the developments of the meeting. We believe the Conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums. All participants are expected to contribute actively to the discussions.

Hotel and Travel Information

Meeting and Housing Information
The conference sessions will be held at the Congress Center (Kongresszentrum). Conference participants will be housed at two or three hotels close to each other and the Congress Center. The Congress Center is the same venue that hosts the annual World Economic Forum. It has complete conference facilities and ample room for poster sessions. We expect to have internet access available at the Center.

All conference participants should come to the Cresta Sun Hotel for hotel assignment. They will be then transported to the hotel to which they are assigned. Hotel assignments will not be made by the United Engineering Foundation and will not be known by the Foundation representative until the day before the conference begins. We anticipate that the following hotels will house conference participants:
Hotel Cresta Sun (Talstrasse 52, Davos Platz (T: 41-81-417-1616; F: 41-81-417-1685)
Cresta Hotel (Talstrasse 57, Davos Platz (T: 41-81-417-1616; F: 41-81-417-1685)
Kongress Hotel (Promenade 94, Davos Platz (T: 41-81-417-1122; F: 41-81-417-1123)

All are modern hotels situated in central sunny positions in the congenial surroundings of the Swiss Alps in this famous resort and are only a very short walk to the technical sessions at the Congress Center. Conference participants will eat breakfast at the hotel in which they are staying. Lunches and dinners will be served at the Cresta Sun Hotel.

Davos
Davos, the highest town (1560 m) in Europe, is a well-known ski resort and summer hiking and climbing center in the easternmost Swiss province of Graubünden. It is not far from the Austrian border, southeast of Zurich, and north of St. Moritz. All hiking trails should be open. Three mountain passes are located within approximately one hour of Davos - Fluela Pass, Bernina Pass, and Julier Pass. Historic Chur, an originally Roman town is full of excellent museums and Davos boasts a renowned art gallery housing many of the works of Ernst-Ludwig Kirchner.

More information on Switzerland and the Davos area in particular can be obtained from the Swiss National Tourist Office (NY: +1-212-757-5944; fax: +1-212-262-6116) or the Davos Tourist Office: +41-81-415-2121; fax: +41-81-415-2100; www.davos.ch). The Tourist office prints a list of current week events and inserts their brochure "Davos Information" which can be obtained both at the hotels and Tourist Office. The brochure also includes information on excursions by post bus and coach (e.g., to Wiesen-Lenzerheide, Scuol, Via Mala, Chur, St. Moritz) and Rhaetian Railway. Guests may be particularly interested in these excursions.

Transportation to Davos
The nearest airport is Zurich-Kloten and an efficient, and picturesque train service (www.sbb.ch) will take participants to Davos in less than three hours. Participants arriving on Swissair can check their bags directly through to Davos. The hotel will provide pick-up service at train station. Once in Davos, each participant will receive a transit pass that will allow free transportation within Davos and three stops in either direction. This is ideal for visiting the local area.

From the Zurich-Kloten Airport, take the airport train (frequent service) to the Zurich main station (Hauptbahnhof). Take Swiss National Railways express to Landquart (about 90 minutes) and switch to the narrow gauge Rhaetian Railway, which runs to Davos in about 60 minutes more. A train schedule can be found at www.sbb.ch Train tickets may be purchased at the airport or train station. Those in the US who are interested in European railpasses can visit the following website: www.ricksteves.com/rail/

Upon arrival in Davos, please come to the Cresta Sun Hotel for your hotel/room assignment. It is a short distance from Davos Platz (not Davos Dorf) station. The van from the Cresta/Cresta Sun Hotels will be available to transport participants. If the van is not readily visible, please call 417-1616 for pickup. If a large group arrives on the same train, bus passes may be distributed and the luggage taken to the hotels by van.

For those who are driving, the distance from Zurich to Davos is 148 km and travel time is approximately 2-1/4 hours.

Once in Davos, each person will receive a transit pass that will allow free transportation within Davos and three stops in either direction. This is ideal for visiting the local area.

Both Credit Suisse and the Union Bank of Switzerland have branches at the Zurich-Kloten Airport where you can exchange money at the same rate as at their branches elsewhere in Switzerland.
