Guidelines for Using the IEEE Logo

Important Information on Usage in Publications andConference Materials

A brief article in the April 1997 issue of the IEEE Institute noted that new guidelines are now available to help members, volunteers and staff with the proper use of the IEEE Logo and Logotype. The guidelines were developed to establish a common understanding about how a strong, consistent identity makes IEEE unique, and to provide simple, concise instructions for users to follow.

A copy of the guidelines can be found on the World Wide Web on the IEEE Copyrights page at http://www.ieee.org/copyright/copyright.html . For additional information, contact Bill Hagen, IEEE Copyrights Manager, Publications Administration, TEL: +1-908-562-3966, FAX: +1-908-981-8062, e-mail: w.hagen@ieee. org.

Here are some excerpts from information published on the WWW pages, starting with some definitions:

The IEEE Logo is the graphic element which, as defined in the federal trademark registration, is "the diamond-shaped emblem" and the symbol for the right-hand rule. It must always be accompanied by the ® symbol (for "Registered Trademark") .

The IEEE Logotype is the letters "IEEE" as printed in Helvetica Heavy or Helvetica Black.

The Logo Composite is the use of the Logo and the Logotype together.

Guidelines for General Usage

The IEEE Logo is registered with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office and therefore must be accompanied by the ® ("Registered Trademark") placed at the lower right.

The Logo must be at least equal in size to any other logo(s) and no smaller than 3/8" (approximately 1 cm) in height; and in a position of equal or greater prominence relative to any other logo(s) clearly visible; and unobscured by any other design or lettering

The Logo may be printed in any one color with any other one color as a background. The Logotype must be in a type size no smaller than 6 points in Helvetica Heavy or Helvetica Black. The Logotype may be placed below the Logo to create the Logo composite.

Logo on Stationery

The IEEE Logo must appear on all stationery used by any IEEE entity, and must comply with the Guidelines for General Usage.

"IEEE" in Titles, Text, and Correspondence

Over time, omitting "IEEE" when it is part of a title will lessen the value of the Institute's name because the association between the acronym and the organization will be diminished. Therefore, it is important to include "IEEE" whenever it is part of the title of a publication, entity or product. In addition, titles for volunteers and staff should be preceded by "IEEE" wherever appropriate and feasible.

Here are some additional situations where "IEEE" should be included

Entity and Publication Names

In most cases, "IEEE" is the first part of all entity and publication names. Whenever this is the case (for example, IEEE Communications Society or IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Magazine), the abbreviation "IEEE" must be used as part of the title. In other references, the abbreviation should be used as frequently as possible.

Within Article or Correspondence Text

When referring to IEEE entities and publications within the text for an article or in correspondence, the abbreviation "IEEE" should be used as frequently as is practical.

Logo in Publications and Printed Products

All Guidelines for General Usage apply to publications and printed products. The IEEE Logo should appear on the front cover of all IEEE owned/copyrighted publications/printed products. It is recommended that the Logo appear on publications' spines and back covers.

The Logo may be displayed either as a solid image or an outline image. It is recommended that the display of the Logo be consistent throughout a publication/product. The Logo should appear as a crisp, clear and distinguishable image, not a 2nd or 3rd generation reproduction.

The Logo may not be used in conjunction with other text immediately below the Logo, other than the Logotype and the title of the publication. When using the letters "IEEE" as part of the publication's/product's title, the letters should be at least 25% the height of the rest of the complete title, and in compliance with basic usage guidelines.

It is recommended that the full name "The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc." appear on the front cover of publications/products. In lieu of design clutter, it should appear on the title page, mastheads, and indicia pages.

The letters "IEEE" should appear with an IEEE entity's name, (i.e., "IEEE Power Engineering Society") only in reference to the entity, not the publication's title.

Use of the Logo at All IEEE-Related Conferences and Meetings

All Guidelines for General Usage apply to conference proceedings. A conference logo may be larger than the IEEE Logo. Note: This conflict with General Guidelines is approved for this usage.

The full name ("The Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, Inc.") must appear on the copyright page of any conference proceedings to which IEEE holds copyright. The full name should also appear in a prominent position, such as the cover or title page of all proceedings.

Conference planners are encouraged to place the IEEE Logo Composite on the spine of both the hard and soft proceedings volumes and on conference promotions (calls for papers, conference announcements, exhibitor's kits, advance and final programs, space advertising, registration materials, etc.)

All Guidelines for General Usage apply to conference promotiona and materials. Conferences sponsored solely by IEEE and/or its entities are encouraged to include the words "The Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers, Inc." in a prominent position in appropriate promotional materials.

Displays/booths/exhibits

Attendees should be made aware through the use of the Logo, Logotype and Institute name that the presentation is sponsored by the IEEE, as prescribed by the basic guidelines.

The Guidelines for General Usage should be applied to banners or posters at the display, show dailies or other on-site promotions, representation, banners or signage at social events, technical symposia, hospitality suites and other functions.

The entire display should be considered the IEEE presence and, as such, it is not necessary to identify each poster or booth graphic element with the IEEE Logo/Logotype/name. However, the composite effect of the display should convey that it is an IEEE display.

Exhibitors are encouraged to remember that attendees and display visitors will get their impressions at eye level, and develop signage accordingly.

Exhibitors are encouraged to place the full name of the IEEE in a prominent position in appropriate on-site signage and promotional materials.

Overall Conference Applications

Guidelines for General Usage apply to overall conference applications. Attendees should be made aware through the use of the Logo, Logotype/and Institute name that the event is sponsored by the IEEE, as proscribed by the basic guidelines.

Suggested mechanisms include: banners or posters in the registration area; welcoming signage; incorporation of the IEEE name/Logo into the conference name and related graphic implementations; use of the IEEE name/Logo in show dailies or other on-site print promotions, graphics banners or signage at social events, technical symposia, hospitality suites, or other functions.
