COPIMERA XVI, the Pan American Congress of Mechanical, Electrical and Allied Engineering Fields will be held in Santiago Chile, September 28 - October 3, 1997. Final manuscripts were due by June 20, 1997. Topical areas of special interest for the Congress will include robotics, machine design, electrical power systems, thermal systems, energy, maintenance, telecommunications, material engineering, productivity, operational methods, electronics, and computational methods. Focus, where appropriate will point to international cooperation and coordination It is anticipated that the registration (in US dollars) prior to August 15 will be $220, and after August 15 will be $ 260. The 32nd Annual Meeting of the IEEE Industry Application Society is set for October 5-10, 1997, in New Orleans, Lousiana, USA. The conference will provide a major international forum to address lighting issues. The Production and Application of Light Committee is responsible for the presentation of papers in the areas that include, but are not limited to, Lighting electronics (Operation, analysis, simulation, and design of electromagnetic and electronic ballasts, ignitors, dimming controls, etc.) - Light sources (Discharge physics - lamp design issues, lamp modeling, etc.) - Lighting systems (Discharge lamp - circuit interactions, power quality issues, etc.) - Electronics packaging in lighting (Compact packaging techniques, component reliability issues, etc.)

The Power Electronics Devices and Compents Committee of the IAS in cooperation with the National Institute of Standards and Technology Working Group on Model Validation will hold a special session on model validation.
