Planning Underway for APEC® '98

by Larry Gilbert, APEC Publicity Chair

Mark your calendars! APEC '98 will be held at the Disneyland Hotel in Anaheim, California, USA, from Sunday, February 15th through Thursday, February 19th, 1998.

Although we have only recently concluded APEC '97, preparation for APEC '98 is already underway. The Conference Committee has started our monthly conference calls to brainstorm how we can continue to improve our program for the benefit of both the exhibitors and the attendees.

As an added bonus, all technical session attendees will receive a CD ROM containing all of the 100 plus technical papers from the proceedings.

In my view, APEC is the leading power conversion conference for obtaining "practical" information as presented by industry and academia leaders from every corner of the globe. I must compliment the management of Lucent Technology (formerly AT&T) for their strong support of this conference. Although Lucent was just recognized as the top power supply manufacturer in the world (by Micro-Tech Consultants), with sales of $700 million, they still recognize the value of participation in APEC. In a discussion with a Lucent engineer I was told they learned of and implemented a new concept presented by a speaker from Brazil whom the general public would never have an opportunity to hear from. During APEC '97, I personally know that the engineering manager of MicroENERGY Inc. interfaced with a highly regarded APEC speaker from Israel in discussion of a new product. You cannot place a value on the networking opportunities that are available to every APEC attendee.

Having access to the latest information and development of materials, topologies, and manufacturing of power conversion products, especially in the demanding times with which all of us are confronted in the electronics industry, is crucial to our survival and growth. Although you can still benefit by reading the proceedings, there is no substitute for being in the audience during the presentations where you can participate during the Question and Answer periods that follow each session.

Where else can the average engineer participate in technical programs, evening rap sessions, or casual conversations with industry and academia gurus without paying costly consultation fees?

You too can become a part of the APEC family by having a coworker or yourself submit a 50-word abstract in your area of expertise for consideration by the Program Committee. The deadline for submission of the abstract is July 25, 1997.

On behalf of the entire Conference Committee, I wish to express our thanks to the hundreds of volunteers whose efforts over the past several years have contributed to the success of the APEC conference.
