Report from CIEP '96

by Hugo Calleja, CENIDET

The Fifth International Power Electronics Congress (CIEP '96) was held October 14-16 in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The congress was organized and run by the staff of the National Center for Research and Development (CENIDET), Mexico, and by the members of the IEEE Morelos Section and the IEEE Power Electronics Society Chapter. Their efforts helped achieve an outstanding meeting.

The congress provided an opportunity for scientists and engineers from many countries to gather and exchange ideas and information. This year, the broadest international participation to date was achieved. The following countries were represented by the authors alone: Spain, Korea, Italy, United Kingdom, USA, Canada, Egypt, Denmark, Brazil, Poland, Belgium, Japan, Taiwan, Venezuela and Mexico.

The congress opened with the conference "Optimizing Core and Winding Design in High-Frequency Transformers," given by Dr. W. G. Hurler. The technical sessions included 44 high-quality papers in topics such as power-factor correction, harmonic analysis, motor drives, and industrial applications. Needless to say, the authors put enormous effort into their work and their presentations. We would particularly like to express our appreciation to the members of the Technical Program Committee who volunteered their time to review the papers submitted for consideration.

A feature of the congress was created by a special group of individuals who shared with us their expertise. This year, five tutorials were part of the program: Power systems for electronic equipment, given by Bob White of Zytec Corporation, USA; High-frequency electronic ballast design for discharge lamps by Marcos Alonso of the University of Oviedo, Spain; Switching converter modeling and measurement by Arthur Witulski of the University of Arizona, USA; Vector control of AC motors by Felipe Pazos of the University of San Luis Potosi, Mexico; and Power electronics in power quality by Salvador Martinez of UNED, Spain.
