IEEE PELS Los Angeles Council Chapter News

The scheduled speaker for the September 25 meeting of the Los Angles Chapter of the Power Electronics Society was Dr. Zhe Zhang of Teslaco. His topic was Integrated Magnetics and Ripple Steering.

He explained in his talk that ripple steering allows currents at noise-sensitive inputs or outputs (or both) of a switching converter to be shifted to less sensitive locations, even to a point inside the converter. Most ripple-steering techniques use coupled inductors, and many allow a combination of inductors and transformers into an integrated magneticdevice.

Dr. Zhang reviewed the basic principles, shared some new design insights, and provided practical design examples of ripple steering and integrated magnetics.

Dr. Zhang is Chief Engineer and Director of Engineering of Teslaco. Many of his power supply designs---both commercial and mil-spec---have been in production by major US and international manufacturers. He has published more than 20 technical papers and has several patents pending.

Dr. Zhang holds a BSEE from Tsinghua University, an MSEE from the Chinese Academia of Science, and a Ph.D. from Caltech.
