Historian Report - June 1996

Prepared for IEEE Power Electronics Administrative Committee Meeting at PESC'96, Baveno, Italy, June 23, 1996.


Activities since last report

  •  
  • Established communications with Andrew Goldstein, Manager and Curator of the IEEE History Center, as a source of advice for PELS history matters.

     

  • Evaluated Zip and similar drives, several types of photo disks, and photo CD's for archiving photographs. Criteria was effort involved, cost, quality, and prediction of probability of recovering images in the future (100 years). Selected Kodak Master Photo CD for archival purposes based on quality and probability they can be read far into the future. Current best cost USA is $0.81 per image plus $10 for CD (holds 100 images).

     

  • Submitted action item to Meeting Committee to formalize collection of meeting publications for PELS historical archives.

     

  • Obtained permission of Adcom to add Steve Freeland and Phil Hower to history committee and wrote letters confirming appointments.

     

  • Wrote letter to IEEE Copyright Permissions for permission to add William Burns and John Kassakian articles on PELS history to the PELS history web site.

     

  • Continued working on PELS History Web site at
     
    http://www.cyberg8t.com/smpstech/history/index.html.

    This included the completion of a photo matrix of all Newell Awardees through 1995 and the start of adding biographical information on awardees.

Plans for next period

  •  
  • Continue developing PELS history web site.

     

  • Start archiving photos on CD ROM.

     

  • Actively solicit "as I remember it" letters.

     

  • Establish archives or need for archives for PELS Newsletters and IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics.
