The recipient of the 1990 award is Professor Thomas A.
Lipo of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The announcement and
presentation of the award, which consists of a plaque and an
honorarium of $1000, was made at the Award Luncheon on June 14 at
PESC '90 in San Antonio, Texas.
Professor Lipo received his formal education at Marquette
University, where he received the BEE degree in 1962 and MSEE
degree in 1964, and at the University of Wisconsin, where he was
awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in 1968. He has served
in a variety of professional appointments, including Lecturer at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison; National Research Council
Fellow at the University of Manchester, England; Electrical
Engineer at the Power Electronics Laboratory, General Electric
Corporate R & D; Visiting Associate Professor and Professor at
Purdue University; and presently Professor at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison.
While at General Electric, Dr. Lipo helped pioneer the computer
simulation of many types of converters and contributed to the
analysis and design of a wide range of industrial applications. He
continues his research interests in power electronics at
Wisconsin. He has published more than 100 technical papers, of
which over 50 are in periodic journals. He has received eleven
IEEE prize paper awards for his work. In 1986 he receive the
Outstanding Achievement Award from the IEEE Industry Applications
Society for his contributions in the field of ac drives.
In service to industry, government and other institutions, Lipo
has served as consultant to over 20 organizations and presented
seminars and worked on special projects for more than 60 groups.
He holds eight patents with one additional patent pending.
In his activities in the IEEE, Lipo has served as chair and
member of numerous technical committees, as a member of
administrative committees, and as the first editor of the IEEE
Transactions on Power Electronics. In 1987 he became a Fellow
member of the Institute.
