The committee's for the 1979 award is Dr. Shashi B. Dewan
of the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. He is well-known
and respected for his original design work, teaching, and
technical presentations in the field of power electronics.
Dr. Dewan's citation is for his outstanding work in teaching
and in communicating technology, his many patents and publications
in technical journals, co-authorship of a textbook, Power
Semi-Conductor Circuits, published by John Wiley in 1975 and
adopted as a text by more than 50 institutions, his development of
a unique power electronics research and teaching experimental
laboratory, his guidance to PhD and MA.Sc students and development
of new research-oriented graduate courses in power electronics,
his guest lectures at more than 50 institutions around the world,
his contributions to the Power Electronics Specialists Conferences
as speaker and session chairman, and his leadership in the
industry Applications Society as Chapter Chairman fro 1974 to
1977.
After obtaining degrees of Bachelor of Engineering from Punjab
Engineering College, Chandigarh, India (1961) and M.Eng. from the
University of Roorkee (1922), and immigration to Canada in 1962,
he earned the M.A.Sc. and PhD degrees from the University of
Toronto in 1964 and 1966. He is presently Professor of Electrical
Engineering at the University of Toronto. Dr. Dewan has graduated
seven PhD's and thirty-five M.A.Sc. students in power electronics
and how has seven more PhD and five M.A.Sc. candidates in his
program, which consist of two senior-level and eight
graduate-level courses in power electronics.
Dr. Dewan is the holder of 12 patents, many of which are now
used for Canadian and American industrial products. he has been
active in consulting practice with several companies on the
subjects of induction heating, transportation, variable speed
drives, and special-purpose power electronics. As a technical
communicator, he has authored and presented more than 60 technical
publications on solid-state electronics. He is now collaborating
with Professors A. Straughen and G.R. Slemon on a new book,
Variable Speed DC Drives, a very timely and useful
subject.
Among the many honors received by Dr. Dewan are the Gold Medal
from the University of Roorkee, Graduate Fellowships from the
National Research Council, and Ford Foundation Fellowships for the
development of new teaching methods.
The 1979 Power Electronics Specialists Conference salutes Dr.
Shashi B. Dewan as the third recipient of the William E. Newell
Power Electronics Award, and expresses its appreciation to the
General Electric Company for its generous sponsorship of this
award for 1979.
