Abstract :
Naturally-commutated thyristor convertors are gradually being introduced to provide voltage control on single-phase supplied
traction vehicles. While such equipment has improved the control facilities of the traction drive, it has also introduced peripheral
problems associated with low power-factor and harmonic interference in signalling and telecommunication circuits. In order to
minimise these effects multi-bridge sequencing, from a tapped power transformer, and fixed power-factor-correction capacitors are
commonly used. An alternative solution which involves the forced-commutation of the single phase thyristor bridge has recently
been proposed. With this arrangement the circuit effectively acts as an a.c.-side 100 Hz chopper. The general feasibility of this
scheme has been demonstrated in practice on car ET 420 of the German railways.
