About this Conference

The United Engineering Foundation (UEF) announces the first conference in Process Innovation and Process Intensification (PI)2. It is evident that Process Innovation and Process Intensification are a means to affect improved refining, chemical and biochemical processes. Government regulation and economic survival dictate that tomorrow's processes consume less energy and raw materials, treat less waste, cost less to build and operate, and provide lower risk to safety and the environment. This conference thus provides an extended forum for PI2 researchers worldwide to present their recent discoveries, developments and challenges in Chemical, Biochemical, Biomedical Engineering and related disciplines.

The proposed conference will focus on the following areas:

The conference will follow the established format of morning and early evening sessions of oral presentations and keynote speakers, accompanied by poster presentations and workshops. We plan an excursion on Wednesday, including a visit to St. Andrews (with possibly a round of golf at the famous Old Course) then or before/after the conference. See the attached questionnaire.

Authors willing to have their contributions considered for an oral or poster presentation need to submit a one page abstract by October 12, 2001. Abstracts should be submitted electronically following the instructions given in On-line Abstract Submission. If unable to submit the abstract electronically, please contact the Foundation.. The organizing committee will review all abstracts, and authors will be notified by December 2001 whether the abstract has been accepted, and if accepted, whether for an oral or poster presentation.

The following is the proposed timetable for the PI2 conference:
12 October 2001: Deadline for abstract
December 2001: Notification of acceptance
31 March 2002: Submission of 8-page manuscript
30 June 2002: Notification of acceptance for paper

Publication of proceedings
Arrangements are in progress to provide for the publication of papers that will be presented at the conference in a prestigious international journal. Instructions on submissions of manuscripts will be sent for those presentations have been accepted.

Attendance of conference
Attendance will be limited and by invitation only in order to ensure the ability to interact with all participants. Any person wishing to attend the conference must submit an application form (form to be faxed or mailed) (on-line form to be e-mailed) to the UEF by December 2001.

United Engineering Foundation (UEF) conferences fellowship program
The UEF sponsors a Conference Fellowship Program. Applicants are limited to those currently active in engineering or related professions with a direct interest in the conference topic. The Fellowship is sufficient to cover the conference registration fee and on-site room and board. Transportation expenses are not included. United Engineering Foundation Conferences
The United Engineering Foundation (UEF) sponsors this conference. The UEF conferences program was established in 1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineering from many disciplines. The format of the conference provides morning and evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Available time is included during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings and informal discussions and is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue on the developments of the meeting. We believe the conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums. All participates are expected to contribute actively to the discussions.

Hotel and Travel Information

Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh, the Capital city of Scotland, has the finest culture, architecture, shopping, and social life in Europe. The 'old town' or medieval city is crammed with pubs, restaurants and shops, overlooked by the famous Edinburgh castle that can be seen from across the city. The 'new town' to the north is the most extensive and best-preserved example of Georgian cityscape in Europe, a tribute to Edinburgh's liberal intellectual heritage. The Royal Botanic Gardens feature 70 acres of beautiful gardens and greenhouses. The former royal yacht Britannia is docked on Ocean Drive in Leith and is open to visitors. Dynamic Earth, a new museum near Holyroodhouse Palace, offers the story of Earth in all its diversity. Visitors can experience icebergs, volcanoes and tropical rainforests, among other things, in eleven galleries with stunning special effects.

Uniquely Scottish attractions include the Caledonian Brewery, Clan Tartan Centre at Leith Mills, Glenkinchie Distillery, Scotch Malt Whiskey Society, Scotch Whiskey Heritage Center, and the Tartan Weaving Mill and Exhibition.

Edinburgh is a vibrant city with the feel and excitement of London or Paris, while remaining intimate and friendly. It is a city that people from across the world have come to know and love. Every August, the world famous Edinburgh International Festival takes over the city with music, comedy and theatre. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world arrive to take part and share in the culture of a great European city. The proposed conference dates will be just after the famous festival.

Scotland is recognized the world over as the "Home of Golf", there are over 100 golf courses in the vicinity of Edinburgh, including the three famous Championship courses - St Andrews, Gleneagles and Carnoustie, all within easy traveling distance. St. Andrews is just an hour and half away from Edinburgh. It is planned to visit St. Andrews as one of the conference excursions, with possibility of playing a round of golf in the world renowned Old Course. If you are interested in a round of golf just before, during or just after the conference, please be sure to complete and return the questionnaire (an Adobe pdf file) and return it as soon as possible. If you wish to play at the New Course (next to the Old Course) at St. Andrews, you need a handicap of not more than 24 for men and 36 for ladies. Provisionally 40 places are reserved for the conference, which will be filled on a first come-first served basis. The allocation of tee-off times will be finalized by the St. Andrews Links Trust in November 2001.

Set amidst the beautiful landscaped parklands of Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh Conference Centre is one of the UK's leading academic conference venues, with a range of year round meeting facilities, exhibition space, accommodation and an extensive range of on-site services. It is ideal for this conference. It is also intended that every dinner will be taking place in a different place in and out of Edinburgh in order to exploit the historical city.
