About this Conference

Conference Objectives
Insertion of materials into final use in engineering applications requires their selection by systems designers. Insertion windows are short, and fewer in number. To assure material readiness, all the elements of the designers' knowledge base should be known, thus requiring the acceleration and integration of materials synthesis, processing, characterization, engineering design, modeling and testing. These challenges exist in a wide array of industries whether it involves the design of aircraft, the formulation of new catalysts in the chemical industry or new materials for drug delivery systems.

The task of integrating across length and time scales for applying fundamental materials behavior to engineering use is still an iterative process that takes time and may not necessarily yield reliable results. Even models and simulation techniques that are presently used in materials science involve a variety of length scales ranging from atomistic levels to the systems engineering levels.

The aim of this conference is to assemble an interdisciplinary group of practioners from the fundamental sciences to those involved in engineering practice. A variety of materials applications will be explored ranging from the aerospace industry to the biotechnology industry. By bringing together specialists in different technological applications, we hope to establish a discussion of generic scientific and engineering methodologies on ways fundamental materials science is integrated into engineering systems in a wide array of applications. Some of the disciplines to be represented in this conference include: materials science, mechanical, electrical and chemical engineering, biology, pharmaceutical sciences, computer science and mathematics. The industrial representation will include: the aerospace industry, pharmaceuticals, chemical processing and catalysis, microelectronics and biomedical engineering to mention a few. With such diverse community we expect to initiate a discussion that will explore new paradigms of materials development that will accelerate the pathway from materials synthesis to final application.

Conference Publication
The organizers intend to publish a post conference book of selected presentations from the conference. All registrants will receive a copy.

Poster Session(s)
Poster Sessions will be a significant part of the conference program, since they offer the unique opportunity for focusing on specific topics of interest and expanding beyond the limitations of the oral presentations.

Submission of Abstracts
Original papers for either oral or poster presentations at the above listed sessions are invited. If you wish to be considered for an oral or poster presentation, please submit a one page abstract by July 15, 2001. Abstracts should be submitted electronically following the instructions given in On-line Abstract Submission. If unable to submit the abstract electronically, please contact the Foundation. All abstracts will be reviewed by the oral and poster session chairs, and you will be notified whether your abstract has been accepted for an oral or poster presentation.

United Engineering Foundation Conferences Fellowship Program
The Engineering Foundation sponsors a Conference Fellowship Program. Applicants are limited to those currently active in engineering or related professions with a direct interest in the conference topic. They must be within ten years of their B.S. degree at the time their applications are submitted. The stipend is sufficient to cover the conference registration fee and on-site room and board. Transportation expenses are not included. Application information may be obtained from the WWW or by fax from the Foundation (1-212-591-7441) and must be submitted by August 11, 2000.

United Engineering Foundation Conferences Program
This conference is sponsored by the United Engineering Foundation. The Conferences Program was established in 1962 to provide an opportunity for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineering from many disciplines. The format of the conference provides morning and evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Available time is included during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings and informal discussions and is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue on the developments of the meeting. We believe the conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums. All participants are expected to contribute actively to the discussions.

Hotel and Travel Information

Lake Arrowhead Resort, Lake Arrowhead, California
The conference will be held at the Lake Arrowhead Resort, a four-season resort located in the green pine forests of the San Bernardino Mountains on the waters of Lake Arrowhead. It is between Palm Springs and Los Angeles, 30 miles from Riverside and only 120 miles from San Diego. One may fly into either the Ontario Airport (55 minutes away) or the Los Angeles International Airport (2 hours away).

There are 177 guestrooms that offer breathtaking views of the mountainsides. The resort has a heated lakeview pool, whirlpools, and private beach. Located nearby is Lake Arrow-head Village with over 50 specialty and convenience stores. Seasonal activities include hiking (with trails for every level of hikers: easy, moderate, and strenuous), fishing, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The Village Bay Health Club, located on the resort's lower level, has the latest exercise equipment, aerobics classes, an indoor running track, racquetball, steam room, sauna, whirlpool, private trainers, and massage therapists. The cost is $5 per guest per day for basic use. Those who wish to play golf will find the Shandin Hills Golf Course in San Bernardino, about 30 minutes away.
