Abstract

Starting of medium voltage large motors is considered one of the root causes of motor failures, particularly if the motor is subjected to severe starting conditions present in Direct-On-line (DOL) starting from stiff network, and or successive and excessive number of starts. Motors at the Arab Petroleum Pipelines Co.-SUMED, Sidi-Kerir terminal are subjected to severe starting conditions due to the type of its operational requirement, which far exceeds the starting capability of most of standard motors available in the market. This paper illustrates all the encountered failures occurred in these motors due such starting conditions, and the remedial actions taken. The experience gained over 25 years in the maintenance and repair of these motors has led to a cost effective modification in both of the stators and rotors to overcome any problem might occur due to starting, and to ensure extension of motors service life with economical, safe and reliable operation.
