FOREWORD

CONTENT: The International Semiconductor Conference (CAS), organised by the National Institute for Research and Development in Microtechnologies (IMT-Bucharest) is now at the 24th edition. This Conference, initiated by ICCE (Research Institute for Electronic Components, merging in 1996 with the Institute of Microtechnology), has been for years a scientific event devoted to physics, design, technology and applications of semiconductor devices and materials, including microelectronics. In the last few years this topic has been extended to micro- and nano-technologies. This is clearly shown by the structure of the present edition, which is dominated by a number of sessions devoted to micro and nanostructured devices and systems, some of them not related to semiconductor physics and technology. The Conference is also hosting a session of "New materials", as well as a satellite event: a workshop devoted to "European co-operation in micro- and nano-technologies".

SUPPORT: CAS 2001 is sponsored by IEEE Electron Devices Society, under whose authority the CAS 2001 Proceedings is published, by the Ministry for Education and Research, Philips Analytical, the IEEE - Romania Section and the Electron Devices Chapter. The conference is also held under the aegis of the Romanian Academy as well as under the Electrochemical Society, Inc., including the European Local Section of the Electrochemical Society, Inc. Special support in organising or financing certain workshops is acknowledged elsewhere in this brochure.

TRADITION: This year the organisers are celebrating ten years since the national CAS Conference has become an international event. During the last decade, CAS has been for many participants a very pleasant occasion to meet interesting people and enjoy a friendly atmosphere. Perhaps a number of circumstances contributed to the annual success of this Conference, such as:

The efforts of the International Technical Committee providing a careful selection of papers;

The traditional local hospitality and a careful planning of every detail;

The time and place of the Conference: Sinaia (the preferred site for international conferences held in this country) is particularly attractive at this time of the year (some details are given in this brochure).

WELCOME: Coming in 2001 from the first time to CAS, you will enjoy a unique, friendly atmosphere. Even the "old friends" of the Conference will find pleasant surprises.

We shall be honoured by your participation!

Dan Dascalu
