Abstract :
The authors deal with some commutation problems and evaluations for
singlephase commutator of fractional power. The commutation heavily affects both high and
low speed operation, but mainly at low speeds (where transfer phenomena prevail) where it is
decisive for all functional conditions (efficiency, temperature rise, shaft torque, brush and
commutator duration). Relevant design evaluations are not easy. The present work makes
available a rather simple equivalent circuit, allowing commutation to be dealt with not as a
succession of transient phenomena, but as a stationary one. The adopted simplification
reaches acceptably approximate and easily deducible results, to which a remarkable industrial
interest seems to be acknowledged. Test results, while showing the said low speed
implications, reveal particular high speed operation conditions of the brush-commutator set as
concerns the contact area.
