Abstract :
The single-phase capacitor-run induction motor is widely used for the household appliances
and in small industrial applications. However, the unsymmetrical structure of the
motor yields a complex state equation for the simulation of its transient behaviour. In this
paper, the authors present a simple model simulation of a single-phase capacitor-run
induction motor, firstly when it is directly fed by a sinusoidal supply and secondly when it is
fed by a bidirectional converter. The simulation was achieved by some modifications to the
Universal Machine (UM) model of the Electro Magnetic Transient Program. With the model,
the authors analyse the transient and the steady state behaviour of the motor in order to know
how to control both the speed and stator current of the machine. The results of the simulation
are compared with experimental data to show the accuracy of the model.
